Skincare for Beginners

Do you want clearer, healthier skin, but don’t know where to start? We get it. The skincare industry can be very overwhelming, but that’s why we’re here to help.

First, you’ll need to determine your skin type. There are four types of skin: normal, oily, dry, and combination. It’s important to know what skin type you have so you can use products designed for your skin. It’s also important because it provides insight into what issues are common in your skin and what you need to do to help your skin be the healthiest it can be.

Below are the characteristics of each so you can determine what type of skin you have.

  1. Normal: Normal skin is well-balanced skin. You have an even skin tone and no visible pores. Normal skin is not too oily or too dry.
  2. Oily: Oily skin is often shiny or greasy. You can have larger pores that become easily clogged or enlarged. This is caused by an excess of oil production and can cause breakouts. People with oily skin tend to suffer more from acne.
  3. Dry: Dry skin produces less oil than oily or normal skin, which results in it being dryer to the touch. People with dry skin may notice their face is dull or rough in texture. Redness and flaking are common in people with dry skin.
  4. Combination: Combination skin has both oily and dry areas. People with combination skin typically find their skin to be oily and their pores larger in their T-Zone, whereas their cheeks and other areas of the face tend to be dryer. Combination skin presents multiple issues as people can suffer from breakouts and redness or flaking on different parts of their face.

The T-Zone is the area that covers the forehead, nose, chin. It makes a T shape on the face. This is the area that tends to be the most oily, especially for people with combination skin.

Now that you know your skin type, you can make sure you’re using products that help treat your skin specifically. Let’s get into what products to use and in what order. Knowing your skin is only half the battle; you also need to know your routine.

The products listed below are basic skincare products that you can find at any store that sells skincare products. You can find good quality products at our online store, your local drugstore or bigger beauty brand, whichever you prefer.

Repeat this morning and evening routine every day. Consistency is key.

Morning Skincare Routine

  1. Cleanser: Using a cleanser to clean your face every morning is important. This will help remove any dirt or sweat that accumulated through the night. Cleaning your skin is the first and most important step in making it healthy.
  2. Toner: Apply toner to restore your skin’s natural pH. Toner also helps prep the skin to easily absorb moisturizer.
  3. Moisturizer: One of the most important parts of skincare is properly moisturizing your skin. Every skin type, even oily skin, needs proper hydration. Use moisturizer every morning after your toner.
  4. SPF Sunscreen: Sunscreen should be applied after every other product and you should use it every day. Good sunscreen, ideally with an SPF of 30 or higher, will help protect your skin from harmful sun damage.

Night Time Skincare Routine

  1. Cleanser: Much like in the morning, you need to start your evening skincare routine with a cleanser. Using a cleanser will help remove built up dirt, sweat or makeup.
  2. Toner: Toner helps even out your skin and prep it for moisturizer. It’s important to use this in the evenings as well as the mornings.
  3. Moisturizer: The last step of your nighttime skincare routine should be moisturizer. Applying moisturizer before bed will help hydrate your skin and protect it from water loss overnight. It’s vital that you use a good amount of moisturizer each night.

Start with this simple routine until you get comfortable with your skin. Once you’re used to your daily routine, you can add in other products, such as treatments for your specific skin issues.
